Visual listening guides

Visual listening guides for the Polytech Orchestra‘s programme notes.

The Polytech Orchestra is an amateur symphony orchestra based in Helsinki. Like other orchestras, it hands out programmes in its concerts where they tell more about the pieces they’re playing. While the descriptions of the pieces are very helpful, they are often available to the user before or after the piece has played: while the piece is playing, it’s hard to focus on reading at the same time. Usually concert halls dim the lights in the audience as well, which does not make reading any easier.

The orchestra is always looking for ways to engage their audience more. To help with this effort, I designed visual listening guides to be included in the concert programmes to help listeners follow along with the piece and to get more out of the experience.

They’ve become a loved staple with members of the audience querying after them if they’re missing.
